Arable land
Kiland Limited owns ~18,600 Ha of prime agricultural land on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. About 14,500 ha of timber is planted to hardwood and softwood, which is under reversion to agriculture.
Kangaroo Island Biochar Project
Kiland’s remediation of the fire-damaged plantation estate to productive farmland benefits the communities on Kangaroo Island.
Kiland is also supporting the Kangaroo Island Biochar Project, which is executing an innovative and environmentally beneficial approach to managing the waste timber by producing biochar.
What you need to know:
- The Project will provide jobs and economic stimulus, aiding the island’s recovery from the devastating 2020 bushfires which left 12-13 million burnt trees and an environmental challenge to harvest and clear the dead wood.
- Under present conditions, burnt timber on Kangaroo Island presents a health and safety risk to the local community and further fires could also impact the community in South Australia, due to smoke.
- Kiland’s investment to revert land to agriculture helps manage this risk in a way that delivers positive outcomes for the local community. The alternative of burning the remaining timber would have significant effects on the community and economy.
Kiland adheres to the highest standards of animal welfare in accordance with our values. We are adherents to the requirements of the Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program. We also have in place a robust koala management plan which far exceeds regulatory requirements.
